I’m not a sports person, but I do know that goalposts are a football thing. Soccer thing? Volleyball? OK, fine. I have no idea which sport they belong to, but I do know that they are a physical, tangible object on a playing field of some sort. If you’re able to lob a ball through that goalpost, then you’re making moves towards winning. All misguided sports references aside, I have goals. Goals that freak me out. Goals that loom large and seem like they are on the other end of the field. Goals I’ve avoided sharing for fear that I won’t reach them.
The entire point of this column is to bust up those feelings and set some realistic goals with the element of public accountability to keep me on task. So here I am getting in formation:
I know that’s Beyonce getting in formation, but let me pretend I have this level of ferocity so I can commit to this on paper — or on the internet where everything is forever *gulp*
I, Whole Hedonist, being of sound mind and (soon enough) sound body do hereby solemnly swear to lose 45 pounds by December 31, 2018. There, I said it. Now, I know what you’re thinking:
“Weight loss? That doesn’t seem very feminist!” “Muscle weighs more than fat! Weight loss isn’t a good measure of progress.” “You shouldn’t feel pressured to lose weight!” “Get strong, not small!” Doesn’t that last one sound familiar? Where have I heard that one before….
Well, let me tell you what I’m thinking. I would like to make this goal a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Timely) one. By setting a date and weight, that is about as solidly SMART as it gets. The relevant part has to do with my doctor visits. I would like to go into a physical ready to counter my doctor’s advice to lose weight via bariatric surgery or medical weight loss. This is a suggestion she first made about a year and half ago and has since made at every subsequent appointment until I told her she needed to stop. My doctor is not a horrible human, but she is trained the way most doctors are trained. That means she has a blind spot on how to deal with someone outside of the norm on height and weight charts. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Check this article on how dangerous fat-shaming in a medical setting can be. I could go on the search for a new doctor, but this is the only issue where we have a challenge.
All of this is to say that I recognize all the reasons why I have set the goal for myself. The main driver is that I am setting it for myself. To make me feel better about how I move my body and how I move through the world.
